1 killed in car pile-up

2013-06-07 16:37
Johannesburg - A woman was killed in a multi-vehicle collision in heavy mist on the N4 in Witbank on Friday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said a truck carrying coal crashed into several vehicles after another truck ahead of it stopped because of the mist.

The truck swerved out of control and rolled down an embankment.

Jackson said an elderly woman in one of the cars the truck hit died in the accident.

She said 15 vehicles were involved.

"While paramedics were responding to the scene, they feared for their lives to get to the injured as they could hardly see what was happening in front of them... so poor was the visibility due to the mist," said Jackson.

Paramedics arrived to find the truck driver trapped in his cabin, under heaps of coal.

"Rescuers had to first begin trying to remove the coal before they were able to start cutting away at the wreckage."

The driver was freed after nearly five hours and airlifted to hospital.

Five other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Jackson said the road would remain closed until clean-up operations were completed.
