Johannesburg - Ten awaiting trial prisoners escaped from police holding cells in Marikana near Rustenburg, North West police said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Lesego Metsi said the prisoners escaped on Monday night after cutting through a wire mesh in their cells.
"They used broken door handles to cut their way out."
They were awaiting trial for offences ranging from murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, rape, theft to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police were alerted to the escape after a prisoner in a cell next to the escapees' raised the alarm.
