Johannesburg - Ten people died and forty others were injured when a truck, a car and a bus collided on the R40outside White River on Wednesday, in Mpumalanga paramedics said.

"A heavy goods vehicle and a bus collided head-on and then a motor vehicle proceeded to collide with the bus. All three vehicles burst into flames upon impact," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.

She said that the ten lifeless bodies lay burnt around the bus, and that the provincial fire services battled for some time to get the fire under control.

The accident happened around 18:45.

The R40 had been closed off and traffic was severely affected, she said.

The injured were transported to hospital for further medical care.
