Johannesburg - Five shacks were destroyed in the George Goch informal settlement in Johannesburg on Saturday morning, leaving 10 people displaced, city emergency services said.

"The cause of the fire is not known yet, however, it will be investigated," said spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

"There were no injuries reported during this fire, however, we are concerned at the number of fire incidence within informal settlements which occurred... this week."

Fires in Roodepoort and Diepsloot on Friday and Thursday respectively saw a total of 57 shacks destroyed and over 80 people displaced.

He said mostly communities residing in informal settlements needed to look after their heating and lighting appliances such as candles, paraffin stoves and heaters.

"We will continue to intensify our door to door campaigns to make sure that communities are informed about life and fire safety education," said Mulaudzi.

"Also, as to how can they be able to look after this appliances safely while in use."
