Cape Town - Rhino poaching continues to be a crisis in South Africa. Here are 10 things you need to know about the scourge.

1. 1 175 rhino were poached by the end of December 2015;

2. In 2014, 1 215 rhino were poached;

3. 826 were in the Kruger National Park;

4. 8 400 to 9 300 white rhino live in the Kruger National Park, according to a survey in 2015;

5. About 5 000, or one quarter of the global white rhino population, are in the hands of private and communal owners in South Africa;

6. 317 poachers were arrested for rhino poaching related offences in 2015. Of these, 202 were arrested in the Kruger National Park and 115 in the area adjacent to the park. In 2014, that number was 258;

7. 125 firearms were seized inside the park in 2015, and 63 just outside the park – a total of 188. It was 148 in 2014;

8. More than 400 magistrates and prosecutors were trained on the specifics of anti-poaching laws in 2015;

9. The Kruger National Park is the epicentre of the poaching crisis;

10. 1 047 border enforcement officials have received training in combating rhino poaching.
