Pretoria - Ten people were killed and dozens more were injured when a bus overturned on the R528 in Magoebaskloof, Limpopo, the Department of Transport said on Sunday.

Spokesperson for the department, Kagiso Mootane said the bus was on its way to Phalaborwa from the holy city of Moria when the accident happened.

"Six males and four females were killed and [approximately] 50 people were injured. They were taken to hospitals in Tzaneen and Nkua Nkua," she said.

The cause of the accident was not known and would form part of a police investigation.

"It looks as though the driver lost control because [the bus] didn't collide with anything," Mootane said.

It was believed the occupants were coming back from Sunday school.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw put the number of injured at 60. He added that one of the 10 deceased patients was a baby.

"When ER24 arrived on scene, they found that the injuries that were sustained ranged from minor to critical. Amongst the injured were children.

"ER24 paramedics treated and transported a total of three patients to hospital for further treatment. The remaining patients are being treated by other medical services on scene," said Rossouw.
