Polokwane - A former police inspector was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the attempted murder of his wife, a senior police official, Limpopo police reported on Wednesday.
The case against Justice Sekgotha, 42, was finalised in Polokwane Regional Court on Tuesday, Superintendent Ronel Otto said.
On October 7 2005 Senior Superintendent Sophie Sekgotha was assaulted by her husband with an axe.
She sustained serious injuries and was admitted to hospital.
Her husband was arrested shortly after the incident, said Otto.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Calvin Sengani, welcomed the sentence and expressed the hope it would serve as a deterrent.
