Police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu said the situation was starting to become volatile as the protesters blocked Beyers Naude Drive.

Mntomezulu said SA Police Service officers as well as Johannesburg Metro Police were monitoring the situation. Police were prepared for any situation and had nyalas and water cannons.

The protesters were apparently giving Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau seven days to provide them with electricity.

They were expected to march to the Honeydew Police Station.

The march is scheduled for between 09:00 and 13:00.

Motorists have been warned to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
