11 arrested over hijacked goods

Johannesburg - Eleven people, including a millionaire businessman, have been arrested after police found hijacked steel, petrol and trucks at a factory in Leondale, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

"They were arrested after a tip off about a truck hijacked with steel," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

"Police found the steel there when they arrived [at the factory]."

But they also found a number trucks in the yard and linked them to four police case numbers for stolen trucks.

One had been hijacked in Welkom and another in Durban.

Speaking from the scene, Makhubela said it appeared that there was also a facility to drain stolen petrol.

The 10 other people were employed as drivers.

The man owns a trailer and transporting company which moves goods around the country and on the continent.

On Sunday morning police were trying to verify the ownership of the vehicles on the properly and taking an inventory of the goods.

The 11 would appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Alberton within 48 hours.
