Mbombela - More than 12 000 vehicles were stopped over 48 hours as part of an Easter road safety awareness campaign in Mpumalanga.

MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, said 113 vehicles were discontinued while another 36 were impounded. He said 39 trailers were also impounded within 48 hours.

"We stopped about 12 912 vehicles on our roads [within] 48 hours through our operation to reduce roads fatalities and accidents" said Shongwe.

"A total of 2 833 notices were issued to drivers for various offences, while 23 drivers were also arrested for excessive speeding, drunken driving and possession of false documents," he said.

He said the operation would continue throughout the Easter holiday.

Shongwe has reiterated his call to motorists to drive carefully and consider other road users in order to avoid unnecessary accidents.

“We need to reduce if not eliminate accidents this Easter Holidays and beyond. We can only succeed if we all play our part,” the MEC said.

The MEC said those who disregards traffic regulations must face stiffer fines.
