Durban - Twelve people arrested in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday for possession of drugs worth about R5 million on the street have appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the case was postponed to 8 January, when they were expected to bring a formal bail application.

Earlier, Captain Thulani Zwane said police arrested six women and five men, including a Burundian, in Umhlanga following a tip-off.

"Police confronted 11 occupants, who were allegedly found busy packing the drugs into straws destined for the street market," he said.

Two children, aged three and nine, were removed from the premises to a place of safety.

Zwane said police confiscated 100 Mandrax tablets, a large quantity of sugars (a mixture of cocaine and heroin) and heroin powder.

It was not clear when the 12th person was arrested.
