Johannesburg - A man was arrested for knocking over 12 youths with his bakkie in Lawaaikamp, George, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

The 35-year-old man hit six boys and six girls, aged between 13 and 22, who were playing in the yard of a house on Mellford Notshokovu Street on Saturday, said Captain Malcolm Pojie.

The man was being chased by a traffic officer as it was suspected that he had been drinking.

Police, who were on patrol in the area, also started chasing the man and asked him over a loudhailer to pull over, said Pojie.

He then first turned into Vuyani Mcamazana Street and then into Mellford Notshokovu Street where he hit the wall of the house where the 12 youths were playing.

All 12 were taken to hospital, where two had to have emergency operations, said Pojie.

The man is expected to appear in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of negligent and reckless driving, drunken driving and driving without a licence.

The police should have used their common sense. You don't go about chasing drunken drivers between dwellings. An accident was bound to happen!

      Alon - 2012-02-13 00:51

What do you suggest they should have done ?

      Varkie - 2012-02-13 06:14

It's funny.... When they do there work people like you complain. When they don't others will complain. Seeing as a lot of crime happens in residential areas and suspects will almost always try to flee I can only ask Alon's question while you sitting in your comfy arm chair.... What do you suggest the do?

      John - 2012-02-13 06:26

Use their common sense! Wait for the man to either stop or wait for him to drive into a "safer" area. Understand?

      Shaun Robinson - 2012-02-13 08:01

Tertia - You can't blame everything on the authorities... Take some responsibility...

      Schmee - 2012-02-13 08:56

Oh yes here we go... blame the people in authority and hence diminish their authority. And then sit and complain that irresponsible people get out of hand. Next you are going to blame the parents for allowing their kids to congregate in one area like that. If the kids were at their own home then only the kids that belonged to that household would have been injured.

"....charges of negligent and reckless driving, drunken driving and driving without a licence." What kind of sentence will he get for that? They should add attempted murder and obstruction of justice.

Once again! The Police are to blame!! What the heck is wrong with you Tertia!
