14 escape from Limpopo cells
Johannesburg - Fourteen awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from the Jane Furse police station cells on Sunday morning, Limpopo police said.
"The 14 escaped from police cells after overpowering a police officer who was serving the awaiting trial prisoners with tea," Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.
They were awaiting trial for attempted murder, robbery, rape, vehicle theft, possession of suspected stolen property, and housebreaking.
"An intensive search was immediately launched and five were re-arrested in Jane Furse."
The other nine were still on the run.
"Those arrested will appear before the Nebo Magistrate's Court [on Monday] facing charges of escaping from lawful custody."
Police asked anyone with information on the escapees to contact Major Martin Seabi on 082-3199-526.
"The provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe has established a task team to investigate the circumstances which led to the escape and he reiterated that drastic steps will be taken if safety measures were not followed," Ramatseba said.
