Johannesburg - Fourteen schoolchildren were injured when their bakkie crashed head-on with another vehicle in Maraisburg on Tuesday morning, Gauteng paramedics said.

The drivers of both vehicles lost control when they skidded on diesel fuel spilled on the highway, said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

The children, who were all aged about 8, and the bakkie driver were treated for light and moderate injuries before being taken to hospital.

The accident happened on Maraisburg road. A large passenger bus with a damaged fuel tank was thought to have caused the spill.
