15 N West vigilantes arrested

2012-02-04 22:45

Johannesburg - Fifteen people were arrested after they allegedly set fire to a local businessman's cars and broke down a wall at his home in the Ntsweletsoku village in Lehurutshe, North West police said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Thulani Ngubane said local residents had accused the man on Friday of being involved in a ritual murder after a body was found next to his business premises.

"It is alleged that close to 350 angry community members... gathered and held a meeting in a play ground and after the meeting they went to the business premises," Ngubane said.

"The community members allegedly set fire to two vehicles, a bakkie and a car, and damaged the property of the man they accused of murder.

"They also destroyed a wall and broke windows of business premises."

The body of 54-year-old Basimane Kgatwe was found on January 31.

Two men have already been arrested for his murder.

The 15 will appear in the Lehurutshe Magistrate's Court on Monday.

To all those people who get excited when a 'rapist' is killed by a mob, this is why vigilantism is bad. The wrong people are often targeted, old scores are settled and business rivals use mob mentality to destroy lives.

So two people have already been arrested and still they burn the premises just because the body was found there? Is it that they wanted to burn something and had the meeting to decide on the target?

And the rest of the world observes uninformed mob justice in SA, wanton destruction of property and baying for blood. Such a wonderful impression we are making.

I'm comming around to the idea of an independant Western Cape faster than imagined, leave the rest of South Africa (Azania?) for these animals, and let those of us who behave in a civilized manner have our own place in the sun, where the rule of law prevails.

@Margie - The locals sometime THINK they know what is going on - this man was killed because they THOUGHT he was involved in a ritual murder. As with many other poor old ladies and women being set on fire or stoned because they THOUGHT they were involved in witchcraft. Thinking of the granny that died not so long ago - I think she was 70 or something years old. Ignorance is just as dangerous. People need to be educated. You can not go and kill somebody because you THINK he/she was involved. You know the nice saying " Presumption is the mother of all f&*k-ups"
