15 burn to death at orphanage

line

Newcastle - Fifteen people, including at least eight children, were burnt to death at an orphanage outside Newcastle on Tuesday, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development said.

Another nine children were hospitalised.

"The number of people burnt to death has risen to 15," said Mandla Ngema, spokesperson for social development MEC Meshack Radebe.

"The person in charge of the home and her four children were burnt to death and eight other children's bodies were found dead."

Ngema said a search and rescue team found two more bodies later in the morning.

It is not yet clear how many of those dead were children.

Investigation

Superintendent Jay Naicker said the police were called to the Hope in Christ Home at eNgogo at around 06:00 on Tuesday.

“The MEC is going today [Tuesday] to the scene of the accident to assess the situation,” said Ngema.

It was believed the children burnt were aged between two and 15.

Two vehicles outside the house were also burnt.

“We have arranged social workers to counsel those that survived in this accident,” Ngema said.

Naicker said fire investigators from Pretoria were on their way to investigate the cause of the fire.

Ngema said Hope in Christ Home was an orphanage administered by the Department of Social Development.

silentcoder says... And would you invite any of these people in to perhaps come and use your loo in private ? If the municipality proposed putting a public loo on the local street corner would you be in favour of that ? The people you point out are mostly commuters who use public transport that takes 4-6 hours a day from their home to their work (or possibly the neighbourhood where they hope they may FIND work). Sooner or later nature's call is going to hit and when your a four hour trip away from your own home (which may or may not have a toilet) ... well you hold it in then, I'd like to see the look on your face by the end of that ! I doubt by the third or fourth time you've been in that situation you'll bother to feel ashamed anymore either. Reality check my friend - they do this thing you do not like because you left them with no other choice. Read the article...
