Bushbuckridge - A 22-year-old man from Mpumalanga was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment after he was found guilty of possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Mhala Regional Court.

Skhumbuzo Mpangane, 22, from Madras village in Bushbuckridge, was arrested on November 5 last year after the police received a tip-off from the Community Policing Forum that he had a firearm.

"The police went to his homestead and found a silver 9mm Norinco pistol with its serial number filed off when they searched Mpangane. It had been hidden in his waistband and no ammunition was found in the gun or elsewhere in the house," said Constable Tshepo Lebyane of the Calcutta police.

According to the Firearm Control Act, owning a gun without a valid licence is a major offence, punishable by maximum prison sentences of between 15 and 25 years.
