Johannesburg - A man has been jailed for in effect 18 years by the Northern Cape High Court for two murders, Northern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Willem Johannes Fortuin, 37, was charged with two counts of murder, two of attempted murder, and one of arson, Lieutenant Sergio Kock said.

He was acquitted of the attempted murder and arson charges.

On Tuesday he was sentenced for the murders of his former girlfriend Rosie Meintjies, 25, and a man, Owen Olyn, 20. They were set alight on the night of 31 March last year.

"Meintjies and Olyn were seriously injured in the fire and succumbed to their injuries," Kock said.

Fortuin was sentenced to 12 years for each murder, of which six were suspended.
