2012-06-25 11:46

Cape Town - A bus crash in Meyerton, Gauteng, has left 19 people dead and 55 injured, paramedics said on Monday.

Netcare911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the accident happened after the bus driver lost control of the vehicle and it crashed through a bridge.

Paramedics worked to free 85 people trapped inside the Putco vehicle.

Three of the 55 injured people are critical, Wicks told News24, 18 are seriously injured and 32 are “walking wounded”.

Wicks said all the people on the bus were adults.

19 killed and 55 injuried, how many people was that bus loarding?is that normal.RIP to the lost ones and families

      Chez - 2012-06-25 11:59

@valentin. i don't know how many seated and standing a bus can hold but i suppose if the public transport is so limited and you have to get to work, you get on even if you know its overcrowded. Our public transport (or lack thereof) is to blame for this horrible tragedy.

      ettienne.pel - 2012-06-25 12:12

Very sad indeed. Would like to know HOW this driver lost "control" over the vehicle. Passengers are always at the mercy of the driver. Condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased.

      procold2 - 2012-06-25 12:55

SPEED, Condolences to the families, valentin i am under correction here but if i remember correctly it is about 48 seated and 26 standing so he might not have been overloaded but surly speed contributed to this.

      camp.j - 2012-06-25 12:59

Reports were made that the bus was carrying at least 85 passengers, this would be classified as overloading. No bus is built to carry that amount of passengers. Our public transport system really needs attention, this is senseless and preventable!

      Fanie Masemene - 2012-06-25 13:30

The largest number that Putco bus carry is 85 seated and 28 standing.

      Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-25 14:03

Its the same with the taxi drivers they don't care about there passengers they only care about how much money they have at the end of the day

  • Joe - 2012-06-25 11:54

    This is horrible news.

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-06-25 11:54

This is terrible! I heard the news report of this accident on the radio this morning and the report didn't sound like it was a disaster! Condolences to those families

  • peter.ndamase - 2012-06-25 11:58

Enough with this PUTCO buses... somebody please sue them!

      Jan - 2012-06-25 12:00

Do it yourself, why must somebody else do it???

  • robert.m.brown.353 - 2012-06-25 12:07

Terrible news, condolences to the families...however if this had been a mine accident both the DMR and COSATU would be demanding closure of the mine and prosecution of management and yet nothing is said or done to the owners or ooperators of bus or taxi companies. When will this carnage be addressed properly as daily we see continued contempt of basic road safety by buses and taxis alike.

      eric.martinsich - 2012-06-25 12:17

This tragic news was only announced. why relate it to cosatu etc.

      ettienne.pel - 2012-06-25 12:29

I must agree to a point with you Robert. After all, I am sure most of the working class are transported on public transport. That being said, it remains a sad day once again in the transport industry in SA.

  • julian.mulder - 2012-06-25 12:10

*sigh* its always putco. I have atleast one trying to drive me off the road daily in midrand. Girlfriend also almost got hit by one the other day on her scooter. She was doing 60km/h and the bus came flying past her.

  • eric.martinsich - 2012-06-25 12:22

Tragic! Tragic! Here one is getting ready to work and your life is snuffed out. All material things/problems at work become irrelevant. Worst of all family has to be told and all the trauma that goes with that.

    so sad..

  • sediko.rakolote - 2012-06-25 12:39

May their soul rest in peace. I don't know why robert.m.brown.353 brings in Cosatu on this matter. His hatred to labour movement makes him not to think logical on issues.

  • Biffabeebs - 2012-06-25 12:39

Drove behind a Putco bus this morning with two of it's 4 back wheels wobbling like crazy. These buses have caused a lot of accidents because they aren't roadworthy.

  • debi.eales - 2012-06-25 12:41

Oh my goodness, an hour ago, News24 said no-one died, now 19 are dead??

  • Fanie Masemene - 2012-06-25 13:23

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-06-25 13:57

very sad indeed, hope for speedy recovery, but, in the name of medical staff, they are the healers...

May their soul rest in peace

  • madmcmax - 2012-06-25 16:34

This is why we need the Police and Vehicle Licencing Authorities doing real work. If the bus was unroadworthy and had been properly inspected it wouldn't have been on the road, and if it was overloaded and speeding a moving police patrol would have pulled it over. There are too many cops skulking behind bushes raising money doing speed trapping.

Putco Drivers are Morons...They do not respect other road users let alone their Passengers...Putco should be shut down. That is what happens when you give buses to old men...Putco is killing people.
