2 000 cars an hour expected in Tshwane
Johannesburg - Traffic volumes through Tshwane from the north of the country were expected to reach 2 000 vehicles an hour as holiday makers head back to their homes, Tshwane metro police said on Sunday.
By 13:00 on Sunday, officials had recorded 1 452 vehicles an hour entering Tshwane on the N1 south at the Carousel tollgate, said spokesperson Console Tleane.
This had risen from 696 vehicles an hour at 10:00. By 11:00, 1 037 vehicles were recorded, rising to 1 363 at noon.
It was anticipated traffic volume will hit the 2 000 mark before 17:00.
Tleane said Tshwane metro police officers have been deployed at all major roads that included the N1, N4, R101, R80, and Moloto Road.
Tleane said metro police would be on the lookout for reckless and negligent driving, drunken driving, and vehicle and driver fitness.
"Thus far no major accidents have been reported. We hope the situation remains as such. Otherwise the metro police are prepared for any eventuality," he said.
