Durban – Two suspected armed robbers were arrested after a brief high-speed chase in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Police were following up on a tip-off about a robbery apparently going to take place in Acaciavale on Thursday evening, Major Thulani Zwane said.

While travelling along a service road, police officers approached a parked red Diahatsu without licence plates. The passenger opened fire on police and the driver sped off.

"Police returned fire and a vehicle chase ensued. A short distance later, the vehicle came to a sudden stop and the driver fled into the darkness."

The 31-year-old passenger was arrested and found with an unlicensed Z88 pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition. He would appear in court on Monday on charges of attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The 32-year-old driver was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in the yard of a home in Honeysuckle Road on Friday morning. He was taken to hospital under police guard.
