2 arrested for stolen cigarettes in Germiston

Johannesburg - Two men were arrested and contraband cigarettes were seized in Primrose, Germiston, on Wednesday, said Ekurhuleni metro police.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said a specialised unit acting on a tip-off found the cigarettes when it raided a shop.

"Police found 202 cartons [of cigarettes] and a master case with an estimated street value of R50 000," Mokheseng said.

A "master case" of cigarettes is the term for a wholesale shipping box, and usually consists of 50 cartons.

"A 27-year-old shopkeeper and the 49-year-old security guard who obstructed officers from carrying out their duties were both arrested," said Mokheseng.

He said the men would appear in court soon on charges of illegal trading in tobacco products, possession of counterfeit goods and interfering with officers' duties.
