2 children murdered every day

2012-09-20 22:22

Cape Town - More than two children are murdered in South Africa every day, according to the 2011/12 crime statistics released on Thursday.

While the percentage figure of crimes against children under 18 showed a downward trend, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa declared war on those targeting minors, during a media briefing.

An analysis by the SA Police Service research task team, showed the gender and age breakdown of the 15 609 people killed from 1 April last year to 31 March this year.

Over 80% of the murder victims are adult men.

Women account for 14.6% of those murdered. Close to 800 children were slain.

Another 758 minors fell victim to attempted murder.

"A greater and growing awareness among parents/guardians that children should be looked after and protected, must be considered," Mthethwa told reporters as he released the crime figures at Parliament.

Over 70 cases of sexual offences against children were recorded every day.

The SAPS research task team head Mzwandile Petros said police were hampered from policing and preventing contact crimes because there was often no warning before murders, attempted murders, assault and rapes were committed.

Petros said the fact was that most of these serious crimes happened on private property, and were spontaneous.

The crimes were often precipitated by drug and alcohol abuse.

And this is called an improvement? So much for protection of the "future leaders"

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-21 06:55

I am one of those that are quick to point a finger at the government, bad service delivery, etc. But, we have got to ask ourselves what sort of society are we? Policing must improve, but the murderers and the rapists and the thieves are among us. They are us. What has happened to morality? What has happened that people care so little for children that 2 per day are being slaughtered? We have become a sick nation...

"Over 80% of the murder victims are adult men." Ok so if your going to give us the statistical run down, wonder why he didn't include crime by race?

Australia's total murder rate was less than 290 for the year.England less than 800. RSA over 15000. I actually have no comment and no need to justify my move to Perth. I feel really sorry for all left behind in SA.

South Africa is a hard country to live and survive in. Parents never stop fearing for the safety of their children, because they know criminals are rife, fearless and inhumane. Not only parents, women fear going out after dark on their own because of the horrific chance of being raped, heck even many men I know are fearful of being out alone after dark. Let's face it, we are all in the same boat and it is taking a toll, we're gatvol, tired of eternal vigilance, we need a break from this, but it is not coming, we are trapped in a country with vicious crime and we're exhausted from it.

Children is our future, and the new generations coming is the answer to further human progress.... They are our future, and the MAIN THING WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF!!!!! THEY WILL DECIDE YOUR OLD AGE HOME PEOPLE!!!!

  • grantdean10 - 2012-09-21 07:25

And just to make it a lot worse - add the aborted pregnancies to that list.. I am sure it would grow astronomically!!!!!

      michael.a.devilliers - 2012-09-21 08:22

Yeah because orphans/babies dumped in bins are so much better.

If we put the same effort we put into saving the Rhinos OUR CHILDREN WOULD BE SAFE

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-21 13:29

Vanessa.ganesan. If it were that easy both the Rhinos and the children and all the people of this country would be safe. People are the doers, greed mostly the motivator and a lack of total respect and humanity the motor which make these people tick. Why we have so many of them is a question I wish someone can answer for me.

This is if you don't count the thousands of children murdered by legal abortion every day.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-21 13:33

CronjeJC. you obviously do not believe in abortion. Do you believe in new born babies thrown down toilets, buried alive, strangled or just left somewhere?. Or are you prepared to see these expectant mothers, some who have been raped, given a loving home where she can await the birth of her child?. Are you also prepared to make sure that she and the child have a decent life?. If not, don't throw stones at people you know nothing about.

Mthethwa should declare war on his ego and his complete incompetence.

It's the Nature of the Beast (in the DNA), Murderers, Rapists and Thieves. Their brains are designed to act on two impulses only, 1) Consumption 2) Destruction. The scourge of our planet, they are neither Human or Animal, they are "The Unreconstructable Neanderthals!"

  • samgaf - 2012-09-25 20:23

About 20yrs ago we had a choice and majority chose the mark of the beast,so sad for the minority that chose law and order and lost!!!!!
