Johannesburg - Two people were killed and five injured when their vehicle crashed into a lamp post in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, on Saturday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

The woman driver, 34, lost control of a five-door Proton on Rondebult Road, hit the kerb and crashed into the lamp post, said Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng.

The woman and a 14-year-old girl died on the scene.

Three other women and two men, between the ages of 42 and 30, were taken to the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

The cause of the accident would be investigated by the Ekurhuleni accident reconstruction unit, said Mokheseng.

Condolences to the family of the deceased. If there were 7 people in a 5-door (hatch?) car, their combined weight might have affected the brakes. I once had 3 rather large people in the back of my old jetta, and I definitely felt the difference.

Sharon, Automobile designers design a large safety factor into the braking system of their product and the performance must come up to certain standards. Stopping distances are also critical and, too, exposed to rigorous testing procedures.

Hitting the curb then the lamp post and killing 2 people looks like speed. condolences to those left behind.

I guess speed was a bit excessive and also driver incompetence can not be ruled out...RIP to the young girl and a speedy recovery to the injured.
