Cape Town - Two people died and 18 were injured when a minibus taxi rolled on the N1 in the Western Cape, the Cape Times reported on Monday.

The taxi was transporting a group to a funeral in Mbekweni on Sunday when it overturned near Paarl, coming to rest wedged between a safety barrier and a bridge.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst before the R45 turn-off. He said a case of culpable homicide had been opened.

Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Keri Davids told the newspaper the injured were found outside the taxi.

"Two children were transported to hospital in a critical, but stable condition. Five patients were treated on the scene for minor injuries, six for moderate to severe injuries and another five for moderate injuries," she said.
