Pretoria – Two security guards were left for dead, and one is missing after a cigarette truck was hijacked on the R55 in Sunderland, Centurion, on Thursday morning, police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said three vehicles had intercepted the delivery van.

"The vehicles blocked the delivery van and started shooting at the guards. Two guards were shot and the third guard has disappeared," she said.

Huma said the robbers took off with the vehicle.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said one security guard was shot in the head, while another had been shot multiple times in the body.

"Both men were found in a critical condition. Once treated, both patients were taken to a private hospital for urgent treatment," Meiring said in a statement.

ER24 said, while on the scene, they had found two women who had sustained minor injuries while running away from the shootout.

"Both women were treated and transported to Kalafong hospital."

Police had opened a case of attempted murder and armed robbery, Huma said.

The disappearance of the third security guard was also being investigated.
