Johannesburg - Two men were arrested after allegedly robbing an elderly couple on their farm near Hermanus, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

A group of four men broke into the couple's house by climbing through the window and robbed them at gunpoint on Wednesday night, Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said.

The 77-year-old man and his wife were not injured. The four took cash, cellphones and bank cards and fled in the couple's red Volkswagen Polo which they crashed in Hemel en Aarde Valley.

Two of them were seriously injured and arrested. The other two ran away.

The two arrested, aged 30 and 23, were taken to hospital. One was discharged and the other remained in a critical condition.

The arrested men were expected to appear in the Hermanus Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of house robbery and theft.
