Johannesburg - Two men were arrested after they apparently opened fire on police who were doing a routine patrol in Midrand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Captain Julian Claassen said two police constables were on a routine patrol on Monday night when shots were fired at them.

"The police were driving behind an Audi A4, when they reached a street intersection, occupants of the Audi opened fire on them," said Claassen.

Police returned fire hitting one man, another was arrested and two others managed to run away.

The injured man is under police guard in hospital.

The motive for the shooting is not known and a case of attempted murder is being investigated.
