2011-12-08 16:17

Johannesburg - Two men were arrested in Alberton on Wednesday in connection with a jewellery shop robbery, police said.

Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the robbers were arrested after shoppers alerted the police.

"When the suspects saw the police, they tried to hide."

She said four robbers were involved in the robbery.

Two of them made their getaway in a hijacked bakkie which was recovered later in Riverlea.

"Police have since recovered the jewellery stolen by the suspects," said Kweza.

She said one of the men arrested was being questioned about the death of a police sergeant shot in Germiston on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old sergeant was shot dead while he was responding to a robbery at a jewellery store.
