Johannesburg - Two men were arrested after they allegedly hijacked a minibus taxi in Hillbrow on Wednesday evening, Johannesburg metro police said.

Officers on patrol on the Soweto Highway noticed the taxi driving recklessly and, when they tried to pull it over, the occupants started shooting, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

Metro police returned fire and brought the minibus to a halt on Odendaal Street in Meadowlands, Soweto shortly before 21:00.

Nobody was injured in the gunfight. They arrested two men and confiscated an unlicensed gun. The minibus taxi's driver was still in the vehicle. He was unhurt.

Two other alleged hijackers jumped out and ran away during the chase.

There were no passengers in the taxi when it was hijacked around 20:00.
