Johannesburg - Two people were killed including a 10-year-old girl and 23 others were injured on Thursday during a multiple vehicle collision along the M1 highway near Booysens, paramedics said.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and found several vehicles strewn across the highway, ER24 said in a statement. A cash-in-transit vehicle, a taxi and several cars had been involved in the collision, which brought Johannesburg traffic to a standstill.

The 10-year-old girl was found trapped inside one of the vehicles while a man was found to have been ejected from his car. Both patients had succumbed to their injuries before paramedics arrived on the scene. They were declared dead on the scene.

23 other patients were found either walking around on the scene or seated in their vehicles, ER24 said.

Among them was a 9-year old boy who sustained critical injuries and a two-year-old girl who had sustained serious injuries.

The remaining 21 patients had sustained minor to moderate injuries, Meiring said.

Those with critical injuries were treated with advanced life support. Once treated, all injured patients were taken to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.

Traffic was heavily affected for some time due to the collision.
