2 killed, 46 hurt in Gauteng accidents

2012-06-30 11:02

Johannesburg - Two people have been killed and 46 injured in three separate accidents in Gauteng over the weekend thus far, paramedics said on Saturday.

In two separate incidents, two women were killed after the taxis they were travelling in rolled and they were flung out of the vehicles, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

In the most recent accident a woman died and five people were injured when a minibus taxi overturned on the M1 near Grayston Drive.

"Initial reports indicated that the minibus had collided with a truck, however when arriving on scene, medics were unable to confirm this."

He said the taxi, which was travelling on the southbound carriageway at the time of the accident, rolled several times.

The woman was flung out of the vehicle and subsequently died from critical injuries.

The five injured were taken to Edenvale State Hospital by ambulance.

Just before 07:00, another woman was killed in Faerie Glen in Pretoria when two minibus taxis collided.

Twenty two other people were injured in the accident.

On Friday night, nineteen people were injured, 12 seriously, when a minibus taxi and car collided head on, on Adcock Road in Dobsonville, Soweto.

    Taxi= coffin on wheels.

      Thobela - 2012-06-30 12:35

jaysonpaul, fully agreeing with u. we have made so much noise and our law makers seems to be turning a blind eye. it affects all of us, not only taxi commuters.

This is no suprise at all, Metro police has so many corrupt or incompetent officers that there is little effiective law enforcement. Most of their time is spent with roadblacks and speed traps instead of pursuing wreckless drives.

When is our useless bloody government going to clamp down on these taxi's... In some ways, I think its only a matter of time before the normal motoring public starts putting them in their place themselves. They're a danger to everyone on the roads, they CAUSE half the damn traffic jams, they're ultimately the ones who have led the charge in the absolute disregard people show for the rules of the road.

Couldn't agree with you more!! 99% of taxi drivers are the most useless, single cell, dumb-wits, couldn't give a damn a..holes this country has ever had the misfortune to have to tolerate. They are nothing short of murderers, and if the government think that the new re-licensing laws will work, they're grossly mistaken, because the taxi drivers cannot be found, they remain anonymous. Metro police are in collusion with taxi drivers.

So time to ban mini busses

      aristar.aristary - 2012-06-30 15:34

But the taxi owners pay so much in kickbacks to exist and they don't train their drivers. A requirement to drive a taxi is a Public Drivers Permit and most taxi drivers don't even have a learners licence never mind a PDP.

An average of 40 people die on our roads every month of the year. An average of 120 people survive but are maimed for life due to road accidents every month of the year. What is it going to take to make this come to an end?

      Kevin - 2012-06-30 12:41

      Ummmm. Ban all cars?

      aristar.aristary - 2012-06-30 15:35

We have to keep the undertakers in business. The probably have shares in the taxi businesses.

      konstabel.koekemoer - 2012-06-30 20:11

@Lacrimose, it is definately not 40 people per month that die on our roads it is closer to 40 people per day! Around 14000 per year!

Another map update?????? It's costing me a fortune updating my GPS with all these new names!!!!!!

  • Erna - 2012-06-30 12:15

And the common denominator to all the accidents? TAXIS!!

      aristar.aristary - 2012-06-30 15:32

There is not a halfway existent public transport system in South Africa available to take the taxi system's place. The half-assed attempt at a public transport system (Rea Vaya and Gautrein) in Johannesburg is so miserably under utilised because it doesn't go where people need to go. So yes lets get rid of the taxis and everyone will have to walk.

  • Gregory Jurgens - 2012-06-30 13:02

Must be because most taxis are painted white.

      aristar.aristary - 2012-06-30 15:36

Then why are they called black taxis?

  • nicholaslefa - 2012-06-30 13:35

This will end if taxi drivers stop eating junk food...These guys are not active but they like Speeding.

Taxi-express to hell. I wonder if Nicolas Cage could star in the film of "Hellrider Taxi"

  • barend.wasserman - 2012-06-30 15:55

Taxi, Taxi, Taxi, Taxi, Taxi, Taxi, Taxi,........ Always a taxi involved. They drive like animals an nobody seems to care. They SHOULD be severely dealt with. They are a danger to society. Clamp down on the taxi bosses and see how they change their attitude.

  • Tony - 2012-06-30 17:49

I will keep on asking. When will COSATU, ANCYL etc comment on these murders? They raise their voices when it suits them, but when text books do not arrive and innocent people are murdered by Taxi bosses, they hide. Cowards!!!
