2 killed at Sasol plant
Johannesburg - Two employees working at Sasol's gas production plant in Secunda died after inhaling fumes, the petrochemicals giant said on Monday.
Spokesperson Nothemba Noruwana said the pair had died on Friday after inhaling fumes from inside a vessel they had been cleaning.
"They were members of a team performing duties as part of a pre start-up process following routine maintenance," she said in a statement, released only on Monday.
Both men were rushed to the Sasol emergency hospital, located within the Secunda plant, where efforts to resuscitate them failed.
"The families of both men have been notified, and have been provided with counselling," said Noruwana.
She said Sasol was working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the incident and establish the exact cause of death.
"The investigation into the cause of this incident is already underway to ensure a full understanding of how this happened and what steps must be taken to avoid similar incidents in the future."
