Durban - Two people were killed and a woman was critically injured when their car was shot at in Msinga, south of Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

"The vehicle was ambushed while en route to Keate's Drift," Colonel Jay Naicker said.

The Witness reported that the victims were National Freedom Party (NFP) organisers.

NFP national secretary general Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa said Bongani Shelembe, a businessman and NFP constituency chairperson from Msinga, and youth secretary Zamo Zondi were killed on their way back from a constituency meeting. Another party member, Thulephi Mbatha, was seriously injured.

“We are appealing to anyone with information to please contact the police,” he said.

The three were travelling in Shelembe’s white Mercedes Benz on the R53 between Greytown and Dundee when they were attacked by four people.

The shooting happened around 17:00 on Tuesday. The injured woman was taken to hospital.

The motive was still unknown and police were investigating.
