Johannesburg - Two men in their 20s were shot dead in a tavern at Sotho village, in the Mooiplaas area, near East London, SABC radio news reported on Monday.

Police said the men were drinking at the pub when another patron shot them in their heads.

They died on the scene.

The attackers fled and were still at large.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Cape, at Macleantown, police arrested a 19-year-old man for stabbing a 23-year-old man to death in another tavern incident.

Police said the man who died had been intervening in a fight in which his friend was involved.

The 19-year-old was arrested and is expected to appear in court in East London.
