Oudtshoorn - A 2-month-old baby girl is believed to have been abducted from a clinic in the Klein Karoo on Thursday morning.

Police are searching for Lashay Billy, who was last seen at the Toekomsrus Clinic near Oudtshoorn at 08:15.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said the mother had been at the clinic with her older child and handed her infant over to a friend when it was her turn to be consulted.

"Her friend was thereafter also called into the [consultation room] and she handed the baby to a woman she didn't know," he said. "When they returned the woman and the baby were gone."

Pojie said police believed the woman had boarded a taxi with the missing infant.

"Officers are searching for the child and have extended the search to include the neighbouring town of Oudtshoorn. Its mother is very traumatised and is receiving counselling," he confirmed.

The woman last seen with the infant was wearing black tights with polka dots and a white blouse, according to witnesses.

The baby was wrapped in a pink blanket.

Pojie urged anyone with information to phone the Oudtshoorn family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit on 044 302 9000.
