2 poachers shot dead in Kruger Park

2012-01-12 12:31

Mbombela - Game rangers have shot dead two suspected poachers in the Kruger National Park, an official said on Thursday.

"During the confrontation… two suspected poachers from Mozambique were fatally wounded," SA National Parks (SANParks) spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli said.

The rangers were conducting an anti-poaching operation on Wednesday night after eight dehorned rhino carcasses were found on Tuesday.

"Field rangers came in contact with a group of suspected poachers. SANParks reported that a shoot-out ensued between the rangers and poachers," said Thakhuli.

They discovered a .375 rifle and other hunting equipment.

An aerial search was being conducted on Thursday morning to determine if any more rhinos had been killed.

"SANParks regrets the death of the suspected poachers, but would like to request the public to assist the police and SANParks with any information which may lead to the arrest of more would-be poachers," he said.

Last year, about 443 rhinos were killed for their horns, with 333 killed in 2010.

No regrets necessary - right on and deserved justice. Keep up the good work!

      Sharon - 2012-01-12 15:10

Cool!!!! Now de-horn them and leave them there for the vultures!

      Thozi - 2012-01-12 15:38

Yes, a breath of fresh air. This is one area where I do not recommend court interventions: The rule should be - Spot, kill and preferably feed the 'carcas' to the hyenas.

      chrisfourielipman - 2012-01-12 15:49

Thozi, you do not want to kill the hyenas by feeding them the carcases, they should throw them in the Crocodile river and let them float back to Mozambique for all to see, and perhaps the poachers from that area will get the message to stay out.

      thozi - 2012-01-12 15:57

@chrisfourielipman Silly me, yes you're right... poor hyenas.

      Mike - 2012-01-12 18:40

@Graziella @ Pointblunt: I'm also African! Get over it or go to UJ! Maybe Pointblunt has more a point than your racism!

      chandre.pelser - 2012-01-12 20:08

It's good that the poachers are learning. But the REAL criminals are the chinese, every chinese a-hole who wants rhino-horn should die, without them rhino-horn would be as valuable as ostrich-toenails.

      ednadp - 2012-01-12 21:40

Libby cannot agree with you more. Why should there be any regrets for these scumbags.

      carpejugulim - 2012-01-13 19:48

Did you know that the heart or the blood of a rhino poacher cures AIDS......spread the word

      Helen - 2012-02-02 17:55

Yes, indeed. Please shoot the filthy bastards on sight.

Well done!!! Hope the poachers rot in hell!

  • Felix - 2012-01-12 12:52

    Boooooya! Good job.

  • adam.leighton - 2012-01-12 12:52

Since there is a clear market for Rhino horn, what SANParks should do is, create a market for Rhino Poachers - say R500 000 per head. Why dont we have the bounty hunter program in SA. It is most popular in the States and extremely effective.

      Heiku - 2012-01-12 13:18

Because in the states they generally embrace capitalism. Here.... nobody even knows what they are talking about.

  • rulinda.engel - 2012-01-12 12:53

Good let that be a lesson

      Ally - 2012-01-13 13:16

Hang them up like biltong on a wire!

  • ktheron2 - 2012-01-12 13:13

Good! Murderers and poachers deserve the same lot. It's fitting that judgement, sentencing and execution take place right there at the crime scene.

  • Shirley - 2012-01-12 13:13

Wonderful news!!! Now leave them hanging in the tree for the next lot to see!!!!!!

      Sean - 2012-01-12 15:31

Don't leave them there to be seen, but instead leave them there till the lions, hyinnas and vultures have a good meal and a good pecking of them. Any bones that may be left over should be displayed as a trophy for all future poachers to get the message of intolerance for these atrocities! One person mentioned that they should not place any sightings on the board, I disagree - use this information to lure these BA...yards into a trap and send them to lion parks to be fed upon! There are a lot of hungry game out there, Hippos would also like to squash them and leave their bodies to the hyinas and vultures! Come on use your brains and lure them. Mention has also been made that poachers are using night vision scopes and helicopters etc and are working in great syndicates - one questiin, are we also making use of the latest, top of the range equipment to flush these thugs out? If not please put in a request to the public to assist with donations to purchase night vision scopes and other desperately needed paraphernalia - I would be the first to donate a pair of night vision binoculars and would also like to challenge other people/organisations to do the same. There is one catch though, I want to see results otherwise I confiscate the goods again because it will implicate that you rangers are not appreciating the support the public are willing to offer! Good on you for this, we want more results using the latest technology available!

  • JakesLR - 2012-01-12 13:15

The best news I have heard in a long time!! Scum of the earth who torture these animals in the name of greed should be taken out of society permanently. The rhino's are killed in the name of greed and they can not defend themselves. It saddens me deeply every time I read about another rhino killing. These heartless murderers have no right to life, we should take them out of society!!

  • anthony.swart - 2012-01-12 13:15

What joyous news, uplifts the heart it does. Good work.

      Derrick - 2012-01-12 13:18

Save the Rhino, kill the poachers.

      winston.mullany - 2012-01-12 14:17

Derrick, sounds like an awesome bumper sticker!

      Odicito - 2012-01-13 07:58

Now Winston, if only Emvelo rangers would aim and shoot at the business man who would be aiming and shooting at the rhino...we could have that bumper sticker made into a billboard on the highway!!

  • Larry - 2012-01-12 13:16

Good News. Should be more of it.

  • Greg - 2012-01-12 13:17

Nothing like good news!! Big up to the game rangers!

  • Gavin - 2012-01-12 13:17

They should've 'de-horned' them and then let them bleed to death.

  • Ashwin - 2012-01-12 13:20

I heard talk of professional hunters wanting to pay big moola to hunt poachers

      Heiku - 2012-01-12 13:27

Become a ranger and hunt them for free :)

      Odicito - 2012-01-13 07:59

No Heiku, get paid to do it!

  • siya.jr - 2012-01-12 13:21

Don't Regret nothing SANPark...they deserve to be shot. Next time please stick that horn in thier S.

  • AGvanderWesthuizen - 2012-01-12 13:23

    Well done Rangers! Thank you.

  • spookhuis - 2012-01-12 13:25

Well done chaps, bloody good job, I'd say.

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-01-12 13:26

Well done!! Hit these poachers hard. They do not care about wildlife so why should we care about them. Shoot to kill, if they survive then ask questions

  • Lida - 2012-01-12 13:28

Now get the buyers of the horns, they are just as guilty

      antoinette.jordaan - 2012-01-12 14:28

YES! Until there's no market for the damn horns, this will never stop. :(

      Odicito - 2012-01-13 08:00

True, for now its like catching drug mules...

  • Rebecca - 2012-01-12 13:28

shoot more of them dead I say, 8 rhinos dead and only 2 poachers! I do not regret them being shot. The only regret is for the loss of the 8 rhinos. Shocking, I was only in kruger 2 weeks ago watching a black rhino with a beaut of a horn relax on a sadnbank, shame to think he could be dead today.

  • yvonnecraig.linton - 2012-01-12 13:28

catch the rest, drop them from the chopper, worked in Nam and Rhodesia !!!

      sachasea - 2012-01-12 13:46

I could see obesity levels in the park's lion population increasing somewhat :)

  • Michael - 2012-01-12 13:31

SANParks shouldn't regrest they were killed!!! Why should the poachers lives be spared???

  • lawson.lutchman - 2012-01-12 13:32

Shout this from the roof tops...WELL DONE!!!

  • mark.l.hale - 2012-01-12 13:34

Exelent work. A lot of people are complaining about the legal Rhino hunt, but here is a better sugestion. SANParks should sell concessions to legally hunt poachers. We could sit there in a hide with a dummy rhino and wait for them. I am prepared to pay a good few thousand.

  • Paul - 2012-01-12 13:34

    Well done!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Herman - 2012-01-12 13:37

    Lekker.

  • Sharon - 2012-01-12 13:38

Good work by those Rangers. Save the Rhino, hunt the poacher.

      Jean-Louis - 2012-01-12 13:52

Would be great if in the KP there would be a display room (like they have one for the elephants) where the stuffed head of the poachers would be stuck on a wall for everyone to see - Human Rights org please stay out of this

  • Donald - 2012-01-12 13:40

SANParks, you really dont need to be politically correct about this matter using the words such as 'SANParks regrets the death of the suspected poachers.... " this is something to celebrate!

  • justin.pretorius - 2012-01-12 13:40

Time to patrol the border between Moz and SA more effectively

  • Stacy - 2012-01-12 13:42

Yes please, thank you Karma. May this year reflect the same number of poachers shot as rhinos last year.

  • Craig - 2012-01-12 13:45

Well done, a good start to rid this world of these bastards, shoot to kill, useless scum

  • Jaco - 2012-01-12 13:47

  • adrian.berghoff - 2012-01-12 13:52
