2 rhinos dehorned in Western Cape

2011-12-12 09:12

Cape Town - Two rhinos were darted and dehorned at Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve in Worcester, near Cape Town, according to a news report on Monday.

Both survived the attack by a gang of poachers, but one of them had to have an abortion due to the strain the attack put on her body, the Cape Times newspaper reported.

Game farm owner Pieter de Jager said that his staff found the rhino bleeding and unconscious.

The rhinos had been darted with an overdose of M99, a morphine drug, and their horns were hacked off with pangas.

A Worcester hospital was able to provide an antidote for the drug and vet Roland Bellstedt was attending to the mutilated rhino.

The darts were sent for forensic analysis in the hope of apprehending the poachers. De Jager said it was difficult to defend the animals.

"Aside from sleeping next to my animals at night, guarding them in the bush, there is nothing I can do.

"The poachers are well-trained armed criminals," he said.

Over 400 rhino have been poached in 2011.

this is soooo sad.... and i find myself thinking at least they were not killed?? weird country we live in, where we become so numb...

      vincent.surics - 2011-12-12 09:58

well one had to have an abortion - amounts to killing in this context

      rynhardt.ferreira - 2011-12-12 10:43

I had the same thoughts Karlien, the "human" race completely messed up!!

      Susanna - 2011-12-12 10:57

Mao said "the red sea will die a beautiful death", Legacy of BRICS "SA rhino will die a beautiful death"...

      Ann - 2011-12-12 12:02

An even sadder reality is that most of the rhinos are darted with insufficient drugs, have their faces hacked and can actually feel what is happening to them. Very often, they roam around the bush for days until they bleed to death - you can read this horrendous end to one of the most beautiful creatures on earth here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10150461012723098 I would have no mercy if I saw poachers anywhere when I visit any of the national parks or private game reserves. These cruel, unscroupulous, callous, greedy people have absolutely no feelings at all and deserve to suffer for time immemorial!

      Ed - 2011-12-12 13:41

sussanna...are you that ignorant to realise how ironic your silly saying is? it is mao's benevelont chinese who are behind all of this. spot the irony.

  • Kobus - 2011-12-12 09:27

Can we please execute these Chinese main brains behind it when they are caught by letal injection?

      Althea - 2011-12-12 09:48

I totally agree with you Kobus...what's good for one should be good for both! Execution I plead!

      Ibhubesi - 2011-12-12 10:31

Yes please! Bring back the death sentence. I can't stand this issue any more! The death sentence might just solve some of our other problems as well. Every game farmer should inject that poison into every horn so that these poachers and the users of their loot all have their genitals rot off! Imagine those beautiful animals having to pay for these morons and their sex drive! Haven't they heard of Viagra??????

      Brigitte - 2011-12-12 10:41

What chance do these creatures have. There are so many people who are deep in the Chinese pockets who happen to turn a blind eye towards the killing.

      procold2 - 2011-12-12 11:04

for sure agrre on the execution bit kobus, the rhinos have lost their identities but better than getting poached

      Ibhubesi - 2011-12-12 11:21

Procold, I think it is terrible taking away a Rhino's pride and identity like this. I agree, at least they are still alive, but can you imagine what this poor animal must be feeling?

  • braamc - 2011-12-12 09:34

And it just continues and continues. What hateful crimes

  • mholthuysen - 2011-12-12 09:40

Time we catch these bastards and "de-horn" them!!

      Ibhubesi - 2011-12-12 10:56

Can I please help with that!!!!

  • kim.titus3 - 2011-12-12 09:53

These poachers need to be mutilated

  • ReunionofIntelligentMinds - 2011-12-12 09:58

Looks like criminals with a little bit of heart and conscience for not outright shooting the poor rhinos. Now they only need to be thought how to dehorn them with surgical precision and stitch them up afterwards. Might I suggest Onderstepoort for training?

  • Kevin - 2011-12-12 10:00

Guys get involved with the International Rhino foundatio , donate money that will be used for resources to fight these thugs . Dont just post comments -Get involved

      Chris - 2011-12-12 13:00

Unfortunately, a very large amount of my monthly earned salary goes to SARS. Therefore a am not in a state of funding more foundations that believe they can obtain “resources” that would help put a stop to poaching. There is only one remedy that would display a huge difference in reducing crime in the Republic of South Africa, the Death Sentence. Because more and more people have lost and are losing their respect for themselves, we will never be able to experience what true living is really like. Death sentence to selfishness seems to be our only hope, then only, we can again start to believe. To me, life should be an asset, not a liability.

  • Ulindi - 2011-12-12 10:00

"Over 400 rhino have been poached in 2011." - How con we let this continue...Gov should start taking it more seriously and provide smaller private game farms with army support (like they do Kruger) at least then the taxes we pay for the armed forces will be serving a good deed

  • Matt - 2011-12-12 10:20

I don't understand why the SA Defense Force is not brought in to assist with this!

      Kyle - 2011-12-12 13:05

They, but too few and not really motivated. it's just a show. What they should do is get the old koevoet trackers out of forced retirement and get them with the SANDF to actively hunt down the poachers. Not just to kill them but get info out of them to catch those higher up... then kill them.

      Ed - 2011-12-12 13:48

in knp the sadf is actually doing a pretty good job...the problem is trying to policy over a thousand game reserves and private game reserves in the country. not easy...also understand that the poachers have hi-tec equipment, a good road network, choppers, night vision, you name it. SA has an excellent conservation record, but how do you face-up to triads that control global arms, drugs, prostitution, child labour, blood diamonds, contraband and poaching. its the same people who control it all. PS: cigarettes are the largest smuggled item...over 6trillion a year (3 years ago)

      Yar - 2011-12-12 13:57

@Kyle I don't understand your comment about SANDF motivation. If they are soldiers they do what they are told. Or is the New Army totally ineffective and disfunctional?

      Kyle - 2011-12-12 15:07

@Yar - SANDF are in parks on patrols, but it's more like a training excerise for them. There is no proactive appraoch. They wait till they stunble into somethng or are called for help. and yes the new army is disfuntional and ineffective. more than that, they are not being used effectivly. Ed, durning the border war the sandf and koevoet face higher number and better equipped soldiers and came out on top, it's all about willingness and propper tactics. Right now there's neither.

  • Daniel - 2011-12-12 10:23

FFS, hate that we humans and rhinos are so helpless it feels against these heartless-monsters doing this to these animals. Worked on a Safe The Rhino docu for YouTube earlier the year and the stats and reality is just awful, breaks my mind...

  • Daniel - 2011-12-12 10:29

Really wish the defense force can be used more all over for this dilema. Btw, what is the defense force doing with all this free time on their hands, surely they can go to these places, set up tents and do something except for training for nothing and eating and spending our tax money?

  • brett.macdonald1 - 2011-12-12 10:43

We need to deploy our military in all game reserves and game parks containing rhino. This is a politically-correct reason to get our defense force back in the field. Our taxes are currently paying for them to be sitting in their bungalows...

  • TeganHeneke - 2011-12-12 10:50

Poison the horns... that way, they will get what is coming to them!

  • Lee - 2011-12-12 11:18

If the Chinese can give the death penalty to that SA woman then we should give the death penalty for those bloody poachers who are killing our Rhino. So sickening.

  • Janice - 2011-12-12 11:46

I HATE these aliens who do this! One cannot call them animals, as that would be cruel to animals!!!!!

  • Jay - 2011-12-12 11:59

Dont these farms have any anti - poaching teams on them..............come on guys get with it.

  • wjverboom - 2011-12-12 12:25

when does this stop?! What kind of sick people do this!? It makes me feel ashamed of human kind! Horrible!

  • spookhuis - 2011-12-12 12:57

OK, this maybe a stupid question, do Rhino horns grow back? (they are just hair, after all) If so, why don't the poachers do the honorable thing and farm them like all farmers do.

      spookhuis - 2011-12-12 13:34

I meant the horn, not the Rhino. Sorry my bad.

  • Ed - 2011-12-12 13:39

so...if i catch the little chinese vermin that are behind this, can i PLEAAAAAAASE execute them??? pretty please???

  • NtombiMasbeu - 2011-12-15 14:49

send these criminal to China for lethal injection or else lets order it and inject the bastards.

  • NtombiMasbeu - 2011-12-15 14:51
