Cape Town - Two people were shot dead and three people, including a senior police officer, were seriously injured when a gunman opened fire at a biker rally in Hawston near Hermanus over the weekend.

Western Cape police said the man apparently started shooting at the victims following an argument.

The victims were named as Rudi Salo and Randy Burgess.

A 26-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the incident.

The off-duty police officer, Rounita Burgess, 48, the acting commander of the Hermanus police station, is in a critical condition. She is the mother of Randy Burgess.

Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana told News24 on Monday that there were no new updates on her condition.

The Cape Times reported that the suspect opened fire on the victims in front of hundreds of people at the annual Steppies Rally in Hawston. Many people at the rally assumed the shots had been a motorcycle backfiring, and did not realise there had been a shooting until people started running.

Salo is believed to have been a friend of the suspect.

Eyewitness News reported that the motive for the shooting remained unclear.

The suspect is due to appear in court on Tuesday, police said.
