Pietermaritzburg - Two suspects were wounded in a shoot-out with police after they allegedly robbed a policeman of his vehicle in Pietermaritzburg, police said on Saturday.

It is alleged that the three men approached a 41-year-old Pietermaritzburg police officer near the Alexandra swimming pool, Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said.

The suspects robbed him of his Toyota Corolla.

The policeman alerted colleagues after the suspects took off.

Magudulela said a shoot-out occurred when police came across the suspects. Two were shot and a third arrested.

The injured men were taken to hospital under police guard.

"Police recovered the hijacked vehicle and an unlicensed 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off," Magudulela said.

The suspects would appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on charges of hijacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa, applauded police for the swift arrest of the hijackers.

"We are glad that our police officers escaped unscathed during the shoot-out. I urge our police officers to remain alert at all times to protect the citizens of this province and prevent criminal activities from taking place," he said.
