Mbombela - Two women, suspected of being part of a syndicate that has been robbing clinics in Mpumalanga of much needed antiretrovirals (ARVs), are expected to appear in the Kanyamazane Magistrate's Court on October 5.

Malambe Mthobisi, 30, and Dudu Motha, 33, were arrested on September 2 for allegedly forming a syndicate that has been stealing ARVs from clinics to resell them to drug dealers around the Kanyamazane area.

Kanyamazane police spokesperson Constable Shirley Mnisi said the women were arrested after they were caught attempting to steal ARVs and children's medication at a clinic in Kanyamazane. They were apprehended by security guards at the clinic gate, who then called police.

"Two women were arrested after they were caught with medication hidden inside their clothes, and charged with possession of stolen property. The police were called and, upon questioning, the women told police that the medication was given to them by a man who works in the clinic," said Mnisi.

Chairperson for the Kanyamazane branch of the Treatment Action Campaign, Amanda Mhlanga, said they were very disappointed with what had happened at the clinic.

"We believe that this has been going on for a long time. We have received information about the suspects who sell ARVs to drug syndicates around the area.

"One of the suspects has a clinic behind his home where he also gives out sick notes to people and sells the medication that he steals from the clinic," said Mhlanga, adding that the organisation would be in court for the women’s appearance in October.

The two were granted bail of R1 000 by the Kanyamazane Magistrate's Court on Monday.
