Johannesburg - Two women were shot dead while a car was doing "doughnuts" ahead of the funeral of an alleged criminal on the East Rand, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Friday.

Moments before the man's family was to leave their home in Sindane Street, Tsakane, on Thursday around 09:00 to go to the cemetery, a white BMW 325 arrived and began "spinning" in the street, Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said.

A crowd gathered around the car. People whistled to show their appreciation and shots rang out.

"Suddenly two females were hit in the upper body. One woman died instantly at the scene and the second woman was taken to Phulusong Hospital, in Tsakane," he said.

The second woman died on arrival at the hospital. It was not clear whether the shots were fired from the car.

Kgasago said arrests were imminent as the identified suspects were known to be living in the area.

The Daily Sun named the two woman as Grace Dube and her friend Ndondo Ngobese.
