20 injured in Grasmere taxi crash

Cape Town - Twenty people were injured, one critically, in a taxi crash in Grasmere, outside Johannesburg on Saturday morning, ER24 said.

Spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said two taxis collided on the R550 Dan Pienaar Road.

Paramedics found passengers lying in the road or walking around, with a woman in her thirties critically injured. They were taken to hospitals in the area.

He said officials would investigate the cause of the crash.

The crash came in spite of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) launching Operation Hlokomela earlier this year to increase safety for taxi passengers and drivers.

To further encourage positive changes to driver behaviour, the Department of Transport and Santaco plan to hold an awards ceremony later this year for the title Driver of the Year.

The prize is a fully-furnished house worth R500 000.

Santaco said in a statement promoting the awards that according to the transport department's statistics, taxis accounted for 10.1% of total crashes, compared with small motor vehicle crashes at 47.9%.
