Johannesburg - A man convicted of raping a mentally challenged woman in Clermont, Durban, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
On Thursday, the Pinetown Regional Court handed down sentence on Sithenjwa Mkhize, 28, for the crime, Captain Thulani Zwane said.
On March 26 last year, the woman was visiting her sister-in-law in Clermont when Mkhize forced her into his room and raped her.
"The victim reported the incident to her sister-in-law, who reported the case at KwaDabeka Police station and the accused was arrested on 19 August, 2011," Zwane said.
He attributed the rapist's conviction and sentence to the Pinetown family violence, child protection, and sexual offences unit's hard work.
