Johannesburg - Twenty-one people were arrested for alleged possession of drugs and drunken driving during a weekend raid on two nightclubs in Midrand, North Rand police said on Monday.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman said a task team pounced on two clubs at about 21:00 on Saturday night. The raid lasted until 05:00 on Sunday morning.
Police confiscated quantities of dagga, Ecstasy and Cat from 19 of the people they arrested. Another two were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
They will appear in the Midrand magistrate's court.
"The raids on clubs have become a priority with the SAPS...," Opperman said on Monday morning.
"This crime prevention strategy of showing a zero-tolerance approach towards drug and alcohol abuse has proven to be very successful. The reported cases related to contact crime showed a remarkable decrease since police started to target the clubs and other liquor outlets on the North Rand."
He said raids on clubs would be intensified in future.
