Johannesburg - Motorists who were drinking and driving in Soweto were not able to evade law officials, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

"This is a warning to people who want to drive under the influence of liquor that as the police we will be on top of them," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

Police arrested 22 people during roadblocks in Orlando, Lenesia, Protea and Eldorado Park.

Makhubela said police conducted operations during the holidays to make sure people were safe on the roads.

Police closed 17 shebeens.

More than 300 people were arrested for various crimes including murder, rape, armed robbery, possession of drugs and possession of dagga.

Others were arrested for assault and shop lifting.
