Cape Town - A 24-hour operations room has been "re-activated" to ensure the speedy flow of information regarding the floods, minister in the presidency Collins Chabane said on Thursday.

"Cabinet has noted the impact of the floods in a number of communities and re-affirmed its commitment to providing assistance and support to all affected communities," he told a media briefing following a Cabinet meeting in Pretoria on Wednesday.

"The GCIS has re-activated the 24-hour operations room to facilitate the speedy flow of information regarding flooding to keep the government and public informed."

Chabane said an inter-ministerial committee (IMC) would ensure the government helped affected people.

The National Disaster Management Centre, monitoring the situation countrywide, provided regular reports to the IMC.

"The public must be assured that government is doing everything to mitigate the impact of the floods," Chabane said.
