Johannesburg - Twenty-six people found crossing highways in Gauteng were arrested on Tuesday for posing a danger to other road users, the province's traffic police said.

"Gauteng traffic police arrested...11 [pedestrians] on the N12 between Springs and Daveyton... and 15 were arrested on the N3 between Vosloorus and Heidelberg," spokesperson Obed Sibasa said.

They would be released after paying an admission of guilt fine of between R200 and R300.

Sibasa said police had intensified efforts to prevent accidents after it emerged that of the 177 road deaths in the province since 1 December, 88 were pedestrians.

In the most recent incident, one pedestrian was killed and another critically injured when they were hit by a BMW in Jet Park, on the East Rand, early on Tuesday morning.
