28 held after RDP house invasion

Johannesburg - Twenty-eight people were arrested on Saturday after they attempted to invade 48 RDP houses in Alexandra, the local government and housing department said.

"Hooligans were trying very hard this morning to invade RDP houses in Alexandra," acting MEC Nandi Mayathula Khoza said in a statement.

"We are informed that 28 people were arrested and they will spend their remaining days of this long weekend in holding cells," the acting MEC said.

The group apparently raided 48 houses on Saturday morning before police were called in to guard the houses and make the arrests.

"We hope that these prowling hoodlums will learn something from their time in jail… (the) government will not stand for any acts of anarchy," said Mayathula Khoza.

She said that the houses looked complete but were in fact still being worked on by contractors.

"They are yet to be handed over to the department such that they can be allocated to beneficiaries."

Mayathula Khoza said the houses were to be given to people already on a waiting list.
