290 sexual offenders face the might of the law

Police across the province have reason to celebrate after cleaning the streets of 290 sexual offenders in only one month.

Of the 290 arrests, 47 convictions have been secured thus far and of those convictions 14 suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment.

In September, various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units in KwaZulu-Natal arrested 290 suspects for various cases including kidnapping, assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, contravening a protection order, attempted rape, child abuse, child neglect, child abandonment and statutory rape.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded these successes and expressed her confidence in the judicial system.

“The sentences handed down will send a clear message to like-minded would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and make sure that they present thorough investigated dockets to courts for prosecution,” Ngobeni said.

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu also commended the FCS units from across the province.

“Once again our justice system has emerged victorious. We applaud the decisions of the courts as it sends a clear message to criminals that they do not have a place in our society,” Mchunu said
